The Lake is 40 kilomtres long, 30 kilometres wide and 186 metres at its deepest point.

Rainbow trout which are the most dominant fish in Lake Taupo, were imported from California and released in to the lake in 1898. German Brown trout were also released about the same time. Both species adapted extremely well to their new environment. They now remain one of the last known resources of natural wild trout in the world.

By law trout are not allowed to be bought, sold or farmed in New Zealand and they can only be caught by fishing for them with a local fishing license.

Hire a boat and a fishing rod and we can advise you on the best spots for catching trout.

Rod hire $15.
